We look at you and smile, at the start of each new day.
When you love a little girl she steals your heart away.
From a precious pink new bundle, to wearing dress-up hats and shoes.
To giggles of sheer delight, as Daddy tickles you.
Ballerina leaps and twirls, ribbons in your hair,
Diapering and mothering your favorite teddy bear.
Days of sidewalk chalk and mud pies, pretend cups of tea,
Gifts of crayon drawings, sweetly singing ABC's.
Carrying a purse of treasures, coins and trinkets of all kinds,
Trying Mommy's lipstick, tears for a dolly left behind.
A bike with training wheels and tassels, a play kitchen where you cook,
Changing outfits to your fancy, a beloved fairy princess book.
When looking back at photographs, we realize time has flown,
We try to memorize each day, for this little girl will soon be grown.
So we stay longer at your tea parties, and ask for one more kiss.
For slowly these things fade away, these are the things we'll miss.
Time slips through our fingers, so we pray for one more day,
To look at you and smile at all your little girl ways.
